Pro Logic: Get Your Exfoliator On! Sunday 15 July, 2012

It’s summer, summer, summertime, and skin guru Ole Henriksen shares his top summer exfoliation tips for keeping your skin smooth and bare-able.

I am on the outs with exfoliators right now. I’m not even sure why. Perhaps a little thing called laziness; if it’s not sitting on my sink, I tend to forget it. But, as skin guru Ole Henriksen points out, exfoliation is the #1 most important step in your skincare regimen—no matter the time of year. Think about it: In the summer, you’re exposing oodles of skin; it should look polished. In the colder months, complexions dull, and an exfoliator only works to brighten it up.

But let’s focus on the summer for now, and how you’ll be wanting to uncover more youthful skin for your warm-weather beauty. “Exfoliation helps to dislodge deep-seeded impurities, refine the appearance of pores and improve skin’s overall texture,” Ole says. “It also helps skin to be more receptive to anti-aging products, like moisturizers and serums.” Well, if that last part doesn’t sell you, I don’t know what will. Here are some of Ole’s summertime exfoliation tips and tricks that will have you—and me, by golly!—sloughing away the rough stuff.

#1 The Magic Number
“Exfoliate your face and body two to three times a week during the summer,” Ole advises. “Since your skin is more exposed to outside elements this time of year, opt for a face and body scrub that’s made with gentler, more natural ingredients like fruit enzymes, lavender extract and aloe vera.” He recommends Ole Henriksen Blue/Black Berry Enzyme Mask.

#2 Prep Your Canvas for Self Tanner
“Before applying self-tanner, be sure to exfoliate with a body scrub so your tan comes out nice and even,” Ole says. “Exfoliating the body enhances circulation, removes dullness and re-texturizes for smoother, more luminous skin.”

#3 Go DIY
Try creating an at-home scrub, utilizing household items that double as natural exfoliants,” Ole shares. “Homemade scrubs can be used 3 to 4 times per week and offer the same benefits as store-bought products. Ingredients like coffee grounds and sesame oil help firm skin and fight cellulite while nourishing and purifying, too.” Try this DIY recipe Ole has whipped up:

+ ½ cup sea salt

+ ½ cup finely ground coffee

+ ¼ cup sesame oil

+ ½ TSP eucalyptus essential oil

Voila! Self-made exfoliator that will have you beach-ready in no time!
