Pretty P.O.V.: SpaRitual Instinctual Clay Masque Monday 11 March, 2013

Experience a new side of ginger with SpaRitual Instinctual Clay Masque.

Though the benefits of face masks are undeniable, I absolutely detest them. There is nothing worse (well, maybe extractions) than waiting for the mask to harden. Ever since I was a little girl, I hated having my face painted. Something about the consistency and waiting for it to dry irked me.

Fast-forward to the present, and I now religiously get one facial a month and use an at-home face mask once a week. For many, a facial service is a treat, but it’s never something I look forward to. And forget about the at-home face masks; I pace around my apartment impatiently waiting for it to do its thing, busying myself to keep from running to the bathroom sink and washing it off.

This week, I decided to switch up my regimen by introducing SpaRitual Instinctual Clay Masque as my at-home face mask. An organic formula, this mask purifies and detoxifies the skin with red clay and Indonesian ginger. It can be used on the entire body, but the very thought of that is completely overwhelming, so I’m concentrating my application to my face and neck only.

First things first: As the label says, it’s made with red clay—and, wow, is it red. I’m familiar with green or a clear masks, and adjusting my eyes to this intense red takes a little doing. Just to be sure, I check the label and am reassured that it doesn’t include any synthetic dyes or fragrances. After I cleanse, I apply Instinctual all over my face, avoiding my eyes and lips.

Immediately, I feel a tingling sensation, which takes some getting used to. The smell, which is heavy on the ginger, is strong. Luckily, I love ginger—I always ask for extra when I order sushi—and after my nose acclimates to the scent, I am finding it to be somewhat relaxing.

As I figured, my favorite part of the experience is washing it off. There’s something extremely satisfying about removing that hardened layer to reveal smooth, silky skin. Thankfully, that is what I uncover—softer skin than what I started with—and not only that, I notice immediate benefits. Unlike most masks, this one instantly leaves my skin feeling tighter—and looking taut. The formula contains organic lemongrass, which is believed to stimulate circulation, as well as red clay to diminish redness and cleanse skin.

All in all, this was one of the more pleasant experiences I’ve had with a face mask. An added bonus? The ginger really worked to clear out my sinuses—a perfect winter remedy!
