Trend Bender: (Sold Out, Mostly) Electric Blue Polish Tuesday 12 June, 2012

A quest for the color of the moment for nail polish, electric blue, poses a problem: It’s mostly sold out. I mourn missing out on Rescue Beauty Lounge’s IKB: 2012, but maybe YSL La Laque Couture Bleu Majorelle and Dior Vernis Electric Blue can act as possible replacements?

I shed a (blue) tear the other day: Upon reading a review by my favorite nail blogger, All Lacquered Up, about Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Fan Collection, I fell madly, deeply, head-over-heels in love with IKB: 2012. The transparent, electric blue “jelly” polish mirrors Yves Klein signature blue (International Klein Blue, or, IKB), and prior to this polish, hadn’t been well-represented in the nail lacquer arena. Rescue Beauty Lounge describes it as a “blurple” (blue purple); I don’t care what special name you assign to it—the name it had written all over it is: MINE. MINE. MINE.

But when I visited Rescue Beauty Lounge’s website, IKB: 2012 was sold out. And even when I took to Twitter to express my utter sadness, Rescue Beauty plunged the dagger deeper in my heart by telling me the product was limited edition; there will be no more…ever.

My desperation took me to Ebay, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger on a bid. Something about driving up the price of a nail polish—no matter how badly you want it—seems wrong to me.

Then, I came across a “pinned” image of another quite striking electric blue: YSL La Laque Couture Bleu Majorelle. A quick search for this uncovered the same news: SOLD OUT. (But maybe not forever-ever?)

As I sat contemplating my electric-blue doldrums, I remembered one of the first Fear No Beauty blogs I wrote detailing Dior’s Anselm Reyle collaboration. In it, a wham-bam-bright blue, Dior Vernis Electric Blue, made an appearance. Though not as deep and rich in tone as IKB: 2012, it could certainly tide me over until a reincarnation is made. (And there will be one; trust me.) Perhaps this bold blue beauty was still available for the plucking? Long story short: It is. I pulled the trigger on purchasing Dior Vernis Electric Blue, and am now twiddling my thumbs awaiting it’s arrival. I’ve already mapped out nail art designs in which I’ll marry it with hot pinks and neon limes—maybe even a shocking orange? But, here’s a thought: Let’s see some more of these electric blues. Zoya, OPI, China Glaze: I’m talking to you…

Do you want to see more electric blue nail polishes?
