Glitter: I’ll be the first to admit it’s not for everyone, but just a touch is certain to add flash to your holiday wardrobe. If you simply can’t picture yourself decked out in sequins (or, you’re not willing to part with the hard-earned cash spangled clothes cost), why not try the newest in glitter nail polishes?
The latest releases in glitter nail polish deliver bling in unexpected, highly textured ways, and just as every snowflake is individual, every glitter fleck has its own effect. Choose from full-coverage flash to just a touch of twinkle, and let your nails do the sparkling this holiday season!
Big on Bling Nail Polishes: The Top Four with the Most (Interesting) Sparkle
My current obsession is glitter nail polish. If you read my Twitter feed, you know this to be all too true. Of course, if I had to choose four that are vastly different from one another, and that offer a wide spectrum of effects, here’s the four I’d pick…in no particular order.
Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Do Ya Think I’m Sexy — Backstage at New York Fashion Week two seasons ago, I was chatting with Deborah Lippmann’s PR gal (DL was doing the nails) and I kept having shiny ball syndrome. See, she was talking to me, but I lost focus whenever her nails came into the picture. That was because she was wearing a not-then-available Deborah Lippmann glitter polish, I Love the Nightlife. The glare from the graphite sparkle captivated me to the point of total distraction…which is a good thing. And now, DL has released more glitter-heavy polishes for the holidays, and man, do they deliver on the fun front. My fave: Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, a clear lacquer that packs in extra-large crimson glitter particles. Layer it over your favorite polish for extra glitz or wear it alone. One coat dispenses just enough to pump up nails, but two to three coats will have your nails as glitter-y as Dorothy’s ruby slippers.
China Glaze Eye Candy Glitter Polish in Lorelei’s Tiara — Imagine you layer your nails with two coats of a glistening, holographic-like silver shimmer nail polish, and then you top that with a coat of blue glitter nail varnish. That’s three coats—not even counting base coat and top coat! Well, hold the polish wand: You needn’t shellack your nails into thickness. Enter: China Glaze Eye Candy Glitter Polish in Lorelei’s Tiara. This baby grants this full-on iced effect…IN ONE COAT. Yep: This polish lays down an amazingly opaque coat of sterling silver sparkle topped with eye-popping turquoise glitter with just one layer. Though one coat is enough, be sure to seal it with a clear top coat, which also ramps up the twinkle factor.
Essie Luxeffects Glitter Top Coat in Shine of the Times — I cannot rave enough about the Luxeffects collection of glitter top coats. Each is so stunningly unique that I highly recommend scooping up all five of them if you can. In particular, this Mylar-fleck-infused top coat transforms any manicure or pedicure into holographic brilliance. The irregular-shaped particles have an opalescent tinge to them, and refract a multitude of fiery colors. Paint it on, and it’s like you have 10 little crystal prisms stemming from your fingertips. Insane!
Nails Inc. London 3D Glitter Polish in Bloomsbury Square — As fierce as they get, this glitter nail polish contains tons of tiny glitter flecks per square millimeter. What I find particularly special about this shade: The color combination of itsy vibrant grape glitter and chunky red sparkle is eye-catching to say the least. If you feel like red nail polish may be too expected for your holidays gatherings, this is should be your go-to.
Good to Know: The new glitter nail polish trend is big on texture, which means your nails won’t feel slick and smooth to the touch. Bigger particles can catch on hair and clothes (and often do), so to prevent any snags, make sure to seal the edges with top coat every few days.
Good to Know: Arm yourself with acetone polish remover because these sparkle-heavy lacquers like to stay put! Removal can take some time and effort, but the prismatic payoff is worth it.
Why You Too Should Have No Fear: Even if you aren’t a big glitter-wearer, these new polishes can be used in extremely subtle, sophisticated ways. Try polishing your nails in a full-coverage opaque color, then swipe the glitter polish over your free edge (tip of the nail) only. This lends just enough flash to feel festive, but not too much so that you feel like you’re creating an arts-and-crafts project for mummy and daddy. And if you really want to do it up like a disco ball: I get the most compliments when I layer two coats of glitter nail polish over a coat of full-coverage chrome (Zoya’s Trixie is my go-to) or shimmer lacquer. I tell you: Nobody can resist my shiny ball..um…nails.
