This past weekend, I hit the Lower East Side (LES) in Manhattan for a street fair, DayLife, wearing the most electric manicure I’ve sported to date. I got the idea for it from Revlon‘s new product, Nail Art Neon, which requires you to paint two layers of white base coat followed by a neon “overcoat.” The theory: The white provides a stark background from which that neon color can truly pop. I figured: Well, this makes sense. And then I raided my nail polish cabinet (I do have one, by the way), and plucked out a stark white (Pure Ice Platinum Magic Base Coat) and a sheer neon (Color Club Get Your Lem-On, which also happens to be scented—a trend I initially thought to be silly, but after wearing this polish, kind of like), and went to work. The result was that of utterly blinding color. My friend, Meredith, did a double-take. “That color is insane!” Yes, it was.

Neon polish is so attention-grabbing, even if you’re conservative with your nail lacquer choices, you really need to try one at least once. I like to say: It’s fierce without the commitment.

Recently, I pulled together the summer collections from top polish companies for the Nailpro story On the Bright Side, and guess what? Neons dominated. Michelle Saunders, the nail tech who polished the digits for the accompanying shoot, shared this with me about the trend:

“Yes, we do see classic neons every summer. Why? Because its youthful, bright and after seeing drab colors all winter long, your eyes can’t wait to see pops of color! The best part of wearing neon is that you can keep it simple, less intense (like a lime or lavender) or get wild with neon nail art. Paint every other nail in a different color: Orange, pink and blue is a great combination. Whether you have long or short nails, be creative with the brights, layer them on top of each other with polka dots, or try my favorite: a sheer pink nail with a neon French tip!”
