When it comes to our nails, choosing a color used to be the make-or-break decision. Now, we’re overwhelmed with possibilities set forth by enterprising nailistas who post nail art pics on the daily—as well as the polish manufacturers that keep churning out printed nail adhesives and futuristic formulations (magnetic and shattered lacquer, anyone?). For those daring enough to dabble in nail design, the process is sometimes tedious (*cough*, lace nails) and not always DIY-friendly.

Recently, I read about newspaper nails, a technique that allows you to imprint the words from a newspaper onto your digits. Never one to pass on a trend—especially one that seemed accessible to a beginner—I decided to try it for myself.

Tools needed: newspaper, base coat, pale-pink polish, top coat, and a small cup filled with rubbing alcohol.

First, I cut the newspaper into 10 strips meant to cover my nails. After applying the essential base coat, I painted on two coats of my pink polish and then perused the paper—well, the New York Times Style Section (hey, it’s news too!)—while I waited for my nails to dry. (Reading optional. Though it is quite convenient in this particular situation!)

Once dry, I dipped a finger into the cup of rubbing alcohol and then covered the nail with a strip of newspaper. After pressing down for 10 seconds, I slowly pulled away the paper, revealing a newspaper design. I repeated the process with each finger and then applied top coat.

Admiring my handiwork, I have to say that my first foray into DIY nail-art was a success!

Why you too should have no fear: For those of you who are intimidated by nail art, fear not! Chances are you have everything you need without having to leave the house for this DIY project. The best part about it: Newspaper nails are easy to do and easy to clean up. Never have I received so many compliments on such minimal effort—which, let’s be honest, is an awesome feeling, no matter what! —Jillian Sorgini
