Fear No: Blue Nail Polish Thursday 29 December, 2011

Since I’ve lived in Manhattan, every year my husband, mother-in-law and I brave the cold and crowds to ogle the holiday windows at Bergdorf Goodman. They are always the most intricate and the least cheesy (you know who you are), and they seriously will blow. your. mind. This year, the concept was “Carnival of the Animals,” and my personal favorite was a vignette that submerged you into the glistening (and most fashionable) depths of the deep blue sea. Blue being my most favorite color ever (if you step foot into my apartment, you know this to be true), it’s not shocking that I was drawn to the opulent fish scales done in beryl, turquoise, aquamarine, topaz, powder blue and more.
While I certainly would love to decorate my living space like this Bergdorf window, I simply don’t think my cats or husband would allow for it. So, on a much smaller scale, I decked my Christmas tree in almost exclusively blue ornaments, and as I was pulling some down today, I thought: impromptu photo shoot! What beauty items would I match with these blue tree jewels? Why, blue nail polish, of course!
A side note: One of the ways I decorate my bathroom vanity is with color-coded nail polishes that I have amassed over the past decade I’ve spent working with Nailpro. And, no surprise, the ones that are sitting pretty, front and center, are shades of blue (with some greens sprinkled in for good measure). So I was easily able to pick a few to shoot, and they truly are some of my favorites from over the years. Here they are:
(For visuals, reference the image above. I’m naming them clockwise from bottom left…)
* Spa Ritual in Crystal Eyes
* BB Couture For Nails in Zuma Wave Rider
* Orly Nail Lacquer in Lunar Eclipse
* Essie Cosmetics in Lapis of Luxury
* Zoya in Charla
* Pop Beauty Nail Glam in Brave
Why You Too Should Have No Fear: I think the last polish name, “Brave,” sums up what most people think you have to be to wear blue nail polish. But I beg to differ. Though you may not opt for a neon blue because it feels a little too thrill-seeker, the spectrum of blue polish shades is vast these days, and hues that are “grayed down” (sophisticated speak for “muted”) really do play to women who simply want to wet their toes (or fingers!) in this stunning color family. Be on the lookout for Zoya Skylar, which nails this type of sophisti-chic blue polish tone to a T. (It’s available January 13th.)
