A-List Beauty: Does Mariah Carey or Nicki Minaj Have the Best OPI Polish Shade? Wednesday 16 January, 2013

In honor of American Idol’s debut tonight, I pull the two best OPI nail polish hues from Nicki Minaj’s and Mariah Carey’s lacquer collections—and then pit them against one another.

The best part of American Idol debuts tonight—the try outs. Man, those always provide a few belly laughs, don’t they? But the chatter that’s outshined the possible contestants is the feud that’s a-brewin’ between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. Is it real? Is it all PR? Eh…we shall see.

Rather than harp on two divas throwing each other shade and expletives, why not instead pit their OPI Nail Lacquers against one another? Yep: Both songstresses collaborated with OPI to create nail polish collections prior to their American Idol commitments. In honor of these two taking their seats as the ultimate pitch criticizers of Idol, I pulled my favorite nail lacquer from each of their collections and brought them toe-to-toe for a good ol’ fashion color battle.

But, of course, my own favoritism is spliced in here. And, each has a bit of back story for me.

For Nicki, who’s polish collection features a few mega-watt brights, deep glitters and a burgundy crackle top coat, I picked Fly, a creamy vivid-yet-rich teal blue. For Mariah, who’s collection is filled with jewel tones, burnished metallics and plenty of glitter, I picked Pink Yet Lavender.

On the one hand, Mariah will forever have a place in my heart. Who can deny her talent? That voice is pure heaven. And, she ushered in a new age of pop-and-hip-hop collaborations with songs like “Boy (I Need You).” I mean, I lived for that song.

On the other hand, you have Nicki, who’s over-the-top fashion and daring beauty choices enchant me, but who’s music hasn’t exactly been on replay on my iTunes. Sometimes, I’ll hear a song and say, “Hey, this is good. Who is this?” And the hubby will fill me in: “It’s Nicki Minaj.” (However, I do not like “Starships.” That song is the devil incarnate.)

On the one hand, Mariah is all butterflies and Hello Kitty (which I love), and so a clear lacquer jam-packed with pastel pink glitter is fitting. I quite like it. As a layering agent, the glitter is pretty, though it takes several coats to get enough large flecks on the nail for my liking.

But….on the other hand, Nicki is all dip-dyed wigs and beefs with Lil’ Kim, and so a trendsetting, butt-kicking teal is definitely on point. I quite like it. As far as opaque creams go, this nail polish is a definite two-coater, which is certainly fine by me. But just know, it’s not as pigment-packed as other creamy blues on the market; you have to apply two coats at the very least.

So even though I quite like both hues, there can only be one winner…and that one is: Fly. Yep, Nicki’s Fly OPI shade is the hands down “nail idol” for me. But which of these divas will win my heart as the most watchable American Idol judge (because, let’s face it: It’s been pretty hard to watch judges who don’t…um…judge on this show)? That remains to be seen…

Who’s OPI Nail Lacquer do you like better: Nicki’s or Mariah’s? Sound off in the comments!
