Try This: Memorial Day Beauty Friday 25 May, 2012

Somewhere, the guy who turns on the sprinklers in the sky is having a mighty good time right now. This Memorial Day weekend is going to see rain and clouds—at least for a good portion of the North East. (And if you’re elsewhere, basking in glorious sunlight, I am jealous!) BUT! An overcast sky never should detract from pretending like the weather is going to be sunny—and the best way to do that with your beauty is to create makeup designs that speak to sun and fun. I rounded up a couple of new makeup items that epitomize summer sexiness—try one or all for your Memorial Day shenanigans!
An eye design that I’m gaga for year-round, but that looks especially entrancing in the warmer months, is a mix of copper, aqua and sparkling brown. Lucky you, Estée Lauder’s Limited Edition Pure Color Five Color Gelee Powder EyeShadow Palette in Bronze Sands bundles these hues, plus a gorgeous sand tone and a sparkling bone taupe for highlighting the brow area. The shadows float onto skin like butter; they feel like velvet, making them perfect for layering and blending, thanks to a liquid-powder-gel formulation that is a marvel to think about. My recommendation: Use that aquamarine tone as your requisite pop of color by concentrating it either on the lower lash line or on the upper lid below the crease. In both instances, apply the shadow wet to bump up the intensity. Then go in with your sparkling sable and coppers to round out the design. I like keeping the burnished tones on and slightly above the eyelid crease, feathering them out to the outer edge of the eye.
Inspired by the glow after a day at the beach, the Bobbi Brown Miami Collection is a lock for summertime beauty. The standout: Limited edition Shimmering Fragrance Oil, which is super-light and sheer—no sticky, goopy feeling whatsoever. Just a few mists of this fine spray leaves skin literally glistening (perfect for accentuating the collarbones) as well as feeling super-soft; that’s because tiny little shimmer particles combine with four essentials oils—olive, seasame, avocado and jojoba—as well as skin nourishing vitamins C and E. The bonus? It smells like Bobbi’s popular Beach Fragrance, so even if you’re stuck on the mean streets of NYC (like I am this holiday), you’ll still feel like you’re kicking up sand and surf. (PS: Maybe you’ll attract some of those Fleet Week sailors with your scent?)
If you’re seeking to deepen and accentuate an already existing bronze base, MAC‘s new To The Beach Body Oil in Man Rays from the new Hey, Sailor! collection will do just the trick. Man Rays is billed as a “glowing tan with multi-dimensional golden shimmer,” and boy, is there ever some shimmer! Though heavy on the sparkle (this is my kind of product!), this body oil gives any skin tone added warmth, and applies sheer with a good amount of blendibility. It’s perfect for rubbing onto shoulders and collarbones for a little added oomph.
The final note to your summer beauty song? A nude glossy lip! Smashbox has a stunner in Buff, part of the Reflection High Gloss Lip Gloss Set (conveniently travel-size, ladies!). Imparting just enough sparkle to accentuate lips, this non-goop nude gloss works a little slight-of-hand by filling in your lip lines with filling spheres, allowing the color to apply evenly. And the finish is high-shine without wearing thin too fast. (Other shades in the five-gloss set: Candy, Hibiscus, Papaya and Star.)
Come rain or sun, what will you be wearing beauty-wise for your Memorial Day fun?
