Story Time: 2013 New Years Makeup Thursday 03 January, 2013
My rush to pack everything for a more than week-away-from-home trip meant being hasty with my New Years Eve makeup choices. I settled on a metallic eye and bubblegum pink lip for a sweet and feminine balance.
I spent my New Years Eve dancing the night away at a beautiful wedding in Boston. But, more than a week before that, I had packed my bags, office printer, scanner, holiday presents, two cats, hubby and sanity to haul to the outskirts of Boston, where I’d be staying until New Years Day. It was a “working” trip; it made no sense for the hubby and me to visit my mother-in-law in Boston for Christmas, go back to NYC and then turn around again for Boston for NYE. And because I wasn’t taking any vacation, I needed to bring my work—and all that entails—with me. So, at midnight the night before departure day, I was frantic, cramming everything into suitcases that burst at their zippered seams.
(My NYE makeup, scattered on the nightstand at the Fairmont Copley in Boston.)
In my haste to fit everything in, my NYE makeup took a back seat. I didn’t get to put as much thought into it as I’d wanted to. So, I grabbed my “essentials”—my go-to foundation and concealer; my black liquid liner; my black mascara—and then I scooped up “everything else.” What will look universally good, no matter what? I thought. Shimmer! Gold shimmer! Copper shimmer! Bronze shimmer! I dug frantically through my kit, unearthing the following:
* Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in 1 (which I later used to line the inner corners of my eyes nearest to my nose)
* Urban Decay Midnight Cowgirl Glitter (which I patted gently over top the aforementioned liquid gold liner)
* MAC Cosmetics Reflects Bronze (which I layered over a base of eye primer and copper and sable eye shadows)
* Estée Lauder Opulent Shimmer Powder (which I dabbed gently along my brow bone)
(The finished look!)
I always make a point of wearing false lashes to big events as well, and this time I used Kiss I-Envy Beyond Naturale 01, which have this very full, bushy effect that I actually quite adore.
To complement my glistening eyes, I gave myself a tawny rose flush with NARS Blush in Oasis; turned up the highlights with Benefit Cosmetics High Beam (one of my all-time favorite makeup products); and coated my lips in bubblegum-pink (with a hint of lilac) lip gloss that has since been discontinued, so no need to even name it. (Try Armour Beauty Opaque Gloss in Candy.) But what I like about this look is combining the copper and gold eye with a bubblegum lip; it’s pretty, feminine and sweet—a wonderful way to even out an ultra-glam, floor-length gown (a sexy Badgley Mischka number that I rented from Rent the Runway—love that site!).
And there you have it: thrown-together New Years Eve makeup that actually came out looking glamorous. Phew!
