Pro Logic: Makeup Artist Sarah Tanno Talks Sweat-Proof Makeup Tuesday 27 November, 2012
Sick of sweating away your makeup? Me too. Makeup artist Sarah Tanno makes up the faces of some of the hardest-working (and therefore, forever sweating) performers out there—so she knows a thing or two about getting the best of perspiration. She shares her favorite budge-proof makeup.
One of the many splendors of living in Manhattan is that you can walk everywhere—you don’t need a car. One of the trying things about living in Manhattan is that you do walk everywhere—you don’t have a car. Walking (for me, at least) = sweating. It just does, no matter the temperature. So proofing makeup against slipping and sliding is as important to me as it must be for someone who’s jumping around on a stage exerting a gazillion times the energy I do (ever), working up a real sweat. Someone like, say, Lady Gaga or Fergie or Katy Perry. Yeah, them. They must perspire, right?
So if these ladies can sweat up a storm on stage without their makeup slithering down their faces, I should be able to walk from Point A to Point B without my face melting—that seems logical. So, I tapped makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, (she’s worked on “Mother Monster’s” dancers while on tour, as well as several performers) to see what budge-proof products she uses on hard-working, steam-producing women. Here are Sarah’s long-wearing, droplet-denying, sweat-stalwart recommendations.
One way to avoid sheen: Go matte. “I love NARS, and I love this foundation because it offers excellent coverage and a matte finish,” Sarah says. Added bonus: The foundation applies sheer, so you can keep your touch light or build-up the coverage as you see fit.
“This concealer is perfection!” Sarah exclaims. Here’s what to get all excited about: “It allows you to blend the two shades to come up with a custom shade for your own skin. I recommend this to everyone; it’s long-wear and conceals all imperfections.”
Stains remain a go-to for sweat-proof cheeks because they, well, stain those apples! “This fun, blendable crème stain offers a natural flush to the cheeks,” Sarah explains. “I love it because you can also use it on your lips!”
Fear No Beauty has sung the praises of Make Up For Ever‘s complete Aqua line; as the name suggests, the products have to do a little something with water—or, rather, repelling it, withstanding it, and basically telling it to take a hike if it’s coming to ruin our makeup. Sarah has a hankering for its long-lasting nature as well. “This liner glides on effortlessly and does not budge! It comes in so many different colors and I have every one. It’s amazing!” she thrills.
There’s no denying it: When mascara runs, a makeup fairy dies. (It’s just fact. Don’t argue it.) But Sarah has found a lasting formula she swears by. “Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara gives long, luscious, full, camera-ready lashes with no flaking or clumping! I’m obsessed with it and my clients can’t get enough.”
Typically, you think of primer for the face—but there are other places a priming product can do its magic, such as the mouth. “This primer is designed specifically for the lips,” Sarah explains. “It’s color-free and can be used with any lipstick or lip gloss. Just apply it beforehand and it improves the appearance of your lips, giving you a sexy, refined, in-place pout.”
All of your makeup is on; now it’s time to roll on out and get your sweat on, right? Not so fast: “Using this setting spray is the last step, but certainly it’s not the least,” Sarah says. “I never let a client leave my chair without spraying them with my secret weapon for picture-perfect makeup. I use the No More Shine formula on my clients while touring, and through all the dancing, singing and sweating, their makeup remains. The only touch-ups needed are a spritz or two of this spray during intermission, and the show goes on; no makeup meltdowns or messes.”
And there you have it: If you must perspire, do so with makeup that can withstand the heat!
