Pro Logic: 8 Bold Makeup Products to Try Monday 17 December, 2012
Brazen beauty alert! Makeup artist Allison gives her top eight bold makeup product picks.
Recently, I attended a press preview where the beauty and fashion overflowed. Everywhere you looked, something gorgeous beckoned. I indulged in a beautiful lilac and mint green mani; I quickly perused the new hair offerings (can’t share details just yet, but there’s a new hair product that is major); and then I met makeup artist Allison Brooke, who was on hand to give mini makeovers. I typically go to these events fully shellacked: My makeup is perfected, and I rarely say yes to having it changed. But, Allison persuaded me to change up my lip hue, and I’m glad she did. As I sat in her makeup chair, we talked in depth about fearless beauty and what that means and, moreover, what types of products are out there that, on first glance, might incite some fear, but are really quite amazing. I asked Allison to compile a list of her favorite bold makeup products, and to share them with my fearless beauty readers. And, because she’s a pro, I invited her to delve into why each of these products floats her bold boat, and how you can use them to float your boat, too. Let the brazen beauty begin!
“With their smooth texture and intense pigmentation, Lime Crime Lipsticks are an easy way to make a bold statement. The creamy formula stays supple all day long and doesn’t dry out, and this lavender color stays vibrant and bold—perfect for a night on the town. Pair this lip with a smoldering smoky eye for an unexpected twist. I suggest applying it with a lip brush to ensure a precise application.”
“The OCC Lip Tars are a great way to play with pigment: They can be sheered-out for a wash of color or tapped on the lip to pack a punch. Pair this blackened red with winged eyeliner to create the ultimate pin-up look. And here’s an added bonus about Lip Tars in general: A little bit goes a long way, so you’ll never have to buy more than one of a single color! (Though you’ll probably want every color!)”
“Pat this true, bright blue matte shadow on the lid for a serious jolt of color. I suggest first tapping a lid primer that is a shade lighter than your natural skin tone on the eyelid, then pressing this eyeshadow over top using a flat brush—this intensifies the color and ensures that it will stay put. Pair with a deeper blue or purple in the crease to add some dimension. Finish off with tons of black eyeliner and mascara.”
“Richly pigmented, intense color, satiny finish: These are truly amazing eye shadows. This duochrome pressed eyeshadow palette features five shimmery shades that can be used wet or dry. Try patting Incantation, a warm copper, on the lid and blending forest green Lucky Charm into the crease. Short on time? Throw Spellbound (a frosty white with gold flecks) on the lids with two coats of mascara.”
“I think NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are quintessential rescue products. Smudge this eye-brightening hue on the lid for an easy, long-wearing wash of color that will complement even the boldest fashion statements. Rim the top and bottom lash lines to create a halo effect that will open up the eyes and make your eye color pop. In a pinch? Tap a little on the cheekbones for an instant glow. And, here’s a bonus: These retail for $4.49—proof that fantastic products don’t have to cost an arm and a leg!”
“Intensely black, soft, and smudgy, Feline glides on the eye so smoothly you will swear it’s a liquid. Generously apply to the upper and lower lash lines and smudge with a Q-tip for the ultimate bold rocker look.”
“The #7 lash is a MAC fan favorite, thanks to its graduated wing and wispy (a.k.a. easy to wear) design. Try putting this lash on the lower lash line for the ultimate doe-eyed look. A bold lower lash is a great beauty twist that is sure to turn heads.”
“Fearless makeup does not have to cost a lot! These fluttery yet full lashes will take any eye design to the next level, and the flexible band makes these lashes extremely lightweight and comfortable. At under $5.00 per pair, layer more than one strip at a time and bat those lashes!”
