It’s Here: MAC Beth Ditto Collection Thursday 31 May, 2012

An interview and video with Gossip singer Beth Ditto reveals why she links makeup with music (“my hometown didn’t want you to pay attention to outside makeup and music”), who her beauty icons are (Grace Jones!), the inspiration behind her new makeup collaboration with MAC Cosmetics (MAC Beth Ditto), and how she got those polka dots on her face (hint: a potato!).

I just watched Gossip singer Beth Ditto on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live!, and I could tell this girl is a spitfire with energy surging through every part of her. And, boy, that quirky energy is on full display in this behind-the-scenes video (below) of the making of her MAC Beth Ditto photo shoot! “I’ve always wanted to be involved with makeup. I love it—LOVE IT. I love the way it smells; I love the way it looks, how people do different things with it,” Ditto excitedly squeals as she’s being made-up (with a potato, no less. I am not kidding. The makeup artist is using a potato as her tool to apply polka dots to Ditto’s face and chest. Must remember this trick?)

And this is all for the MAC Beth Ditto makeup collaboration between the singer and MAC Cosmetics, which I reported on in January, and is now—finally—on shelves (but only for a limited time, ladies!).

 Beth Ditto MAC Complete Collection

The line is frenetic and fun (polka-dotted powder, anyone?), like its namesake. To give you more insight into Ditto’s inspiration and beauty ideals, she candidly (and gamely) chats about it all—including her fave product from the MAC Beth Ditto collection. (Because everyone always has their “baby”!)

“By the time I was in high school, all of my friends asked me to do their makeup for prom, and makeup is a big part of who I am,” Ditto says. “I love that it has the potential to transform a person; you can become a clown or a princess. Makeup offers someone the unique freedom to become someone else for the day, 10 minutes or the rest of their life. It is something that you can hide behind, but also something that can give you confidence. That’s why I love makeup so much!!”

On her beauty icons: “Peggy Moffitt and Grace Jones are definitely my ultimate beauty icons. Their looks are timeless. They can constantly transform themselves without losing their own identities. To this day, their signature
looks are still very relevant.”

On her distinctive look: “My look is ‘put together.’ I am not really into high glam, because I am not that…ambitious, but I am really into makeup. I always have my eyeliner on, my hair done and a nice pair of black flats.”

On the link between her music and makeup: “I am a child of the 80s. When I was about five years old, MTV was made illegal in my hometown, so it felt like I was stuck on a deserted island with both Cyndi Lauper and Boy George’s music. They didn’t want you to pay attention only to their music or makeup—they wanted you to pay attention to both! I am obsessed with their music and also the looks they cultivated that ultimately defined the decade. So, for me, there is always a very strong correlation between music and makeup.”

On her color instincts: “I’m passionate about color. My best friend and I sit and look at Pantone books for fun. We’ll be like, ‘Oh my God, Pantone 93 is amazing!’ That’s the kind of stuff I do; it’s inspiring, I’ve always loved color. Maybe it has something to do with the Wizard of Oz. I remember that being the most amazing moment ever, when the color comes in.”

On her favorite MAC Beth Ditto product: “MAC Liquidlast Liner: I can’t live without it! A close second is the Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner with dual colors, I really love versatility in makeup—it’s my favorite thing. I hardly ever use a product in the way it’s meant to be used.

On the inspiration behind the collection: “Being able to combine the colors, and the ability to look good on girls of all skin tones and types. From the darkest skin to the palest skin and everyone in between!”

On the idea behind the shoot: “Polka dots. A lot of off-the-cuff things are going on in the shot. The cranberry bob was important to me. I was having dreams about cranberries at the time. The makeup artist also had the idea of using a potato to create polka dots on my body—so potatoes! It’s a combination of Peggy Moffitt and Pricilla Presley!”

MAC Beth Ditto is available starting June 7 through July 19 at

Will you be trying out these fun colors for summer?
