Red Carpet Beauty: Hair at the 2013 Golden Globes Monday 14 January, 2013

Hair at the 70th Golden Globes goes retro or relaxed, but always full-on glam! Here’s how A-listers Claire Danes, Jessica Chastain, Kate Hudson, Julianne Moore and Jessica Alba got their hairstyles.

The retro influence made a big push on the 70th Golden Globes red carpet; how many times did A-listers turn to hyper-glossed, flowing waves? But, that’s OK; it’s a style that has been proven time and again to be a look that accentuates most everyone’s features. And when the ladies of film and television weren’t reviving Old Hollywood, they masterfully showed off modern-day beauty with tousled locks that are befitting women both on and off the red carpet.

Here, a look at how to get some of the most stunning hair looks from the hairstylists behind them.

Jessica Alba: Hair by Robert Ramos

(Products: T3)

The Look: “We wanted her to look like a classic movie star—like Rita Hayworth,” says hairstylist Robert Ramos. “She’s wearing a strapless dress, so we decided to tuck her hair behind one ear in order to expose one side.”

How to Get the Look:

Step 1: Using your hands only, rough blow-dry hair with T3 Evolution LongLife dryer.

Step 2: Curl hair with T3 SinglePass Twirl curling iron, and then pin each curl and let the whole set cool.

Step 3: Once hair is cooled, release curls and brush them out to form waves. Expert Tip: “It is very important to let hair cool completely when curls are setting,” says Ramos. “Don’t be afraid to really brush out the curls in order to form the waves you want.”

Step 4: Finish with a little hair spray.

Kate Hudson: Hair by David Babaii

(Products: IT&LY HAIRFASHION)

The Look: “I wanted to show off Kate’s healthy, shiny hair in a style that emphasizes her true Hollywood beauty. As the perfect muse and my inspiration, Kate is my generation’s Brigitte Bardot, showing off soft voluptuous hair that is touchable, glamorous and now Kate’s very own signature look,” says hairstylist David Babaii.

How to Get the Look:

Step 1: Start with IT&LY’s Pure Water Drops Serum before blow-drying.

Step 2: Add IT&LY Pure Style Mousse Strong and used a medium round brush at the root area to add volume.

Step 3: While still blow-drying, switch to a large round brush to smooth and create soft rounded edges.

Step 4: After drying, create a natural side part spritzing IT&LY’s Pure Volumizing Eco at the base for added lift and down the shaft for more piece-y definition.

Step 5: For a sexy fringe, wrap the bang area around a medium round brush and spray a small amount of IT&LY’s Pure Volumizing Eco again. With the blow-dryer temperature on high, direct the heat on the brush and then follow with a quick blast of cool air to set the look.

Step 6: Gently remove the brush to release the fringe. Using your fingers, comb through and allow the hair to fall naturally into place.

Step 7: To finish, mist hair with IT&LY Pure Definition Hair Spray for soft, touchable hair with memory hold.

Jessica Chastain: Hair by Renato Campora

(Products: Osis+ and Sultra)

The Look: “This slicked-back style exudes vintage Hollywood glamour,” says hairstylist Renato Campora.

How to Get the Look:

Step 1: First, mix together Osis+ Body Me Bodyifying Volume Serum and Hold Miracle Ultra Strong Cream Mousse. Apply the mixture on wet hair from roots to ends. Expert Tip: “The combination of these products will not only deliver a fuller ‘do, but also offer protection against heat and create a strong, smooth and touchable hold sans the stickiness.”

Step 2: To infuse volume and shine, dry hair with Sultra Temptress Power Dryer using a round brush.

Step 3: Once hair is dry, curl the entire head using Sultra Bombshell One-Inch Rod Clipless Curling Iron.

Step 4: Create a middle part and the pin-set the curls, setting the waves with Osis+ Elastic Flexible Hold Hairspray.

Step 5: Once cooled, unpin the curls. Spray a thin brush with Osis+ Freeze Strong Hold Spray and then, using the brush, slick back the sides of the hair away from the face.

Step 6: Finish the look by spritzing Osis+ Sparkler Shine Spray through the lengths to enhance the curves of the retro waves.

Claire Danes: Hair by Peter Butler

(Products: Frizz-Ease by John Frieda)

The Look:  Taking inspiration from the Homeland actress’ red-hot Versace gown, hairstylist Peter Butler gave Danes sexy, loose waves, likening her to a modern-day Jessica Rabbit.

How to Get the Look:

Step 1: Blow-dry hair with a large, round, boar bristle brush.

Step 2: Take a curling iron with a 1 1/2 inch barrel and start curling hair section by section. Set the curls with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hairspray.

Step 3: To create the perfect wave, use a paddle brush to brush through curls. Apply Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Crème throughout the hair. Expert Tip: This cream will soften hair and add shine while leaving the curls chunky and intact.

Step 4: Finish by adding a fine mist of Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to lock in the style.

Julianne Moore: Hair by Chris McMillan

(Products: Living Proof)

The Look: “It all started with the dress,” says Living Proof celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan. “Julianne showed me what she was wearing yesterday and I had 24 hours to figure out how to style her hair. Overall it was a ‘60s look—I have been watching a lot of Hitchcock lately. I took inspiration from the graphic clothing styles that are a trend this season paired with the hair I saw on the runways of Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs.”

How to Get the Look:

Step 1: Apply Living Proof Prime Style Extender to damp hair; this will provide a good styling foundation plus protect hair against heat-styling.

Step 2: Apply No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray to the crown to keep the hair looking smooth. Blow-dry the hair straight with a large round brush.

Step 3: Draw a deep side-swept bang, and then pull the hair back into a classic French twist with an uneven seam. “Everything else about the look was so perfect and sleek that I wanted the seam to be a little deconstructed,” says McMillan.

Step 4: Finally, secure the look with bobby pins and add Firm Hold Hairspray to lock-in the look.
