All-natural and color-preserving? Earthly Elements Hair Care System Brazilian Citrus Color Preserving Shampoo and Conditioner promise high-performance haircolor protection—using natural ingredients.

For some it’s an unnerving milestone, that token sign of aging. We scour our scalps searching for pesky gray hairs—and when we find them, they seemingly multiply.

For me, my “gray recognition” was far from traumatic. My mom discovered my first silver strand when I was in middle school. She had gray hairs at a young age and it seemed I would not be spared a similar fate. Going gray at a young age runs in my family. I expected it; my expectations were met. Luckily, we’ve all befriended colorists or have become quite the colorists ourselves.

I’ve never had a problem with what I like to call my “gray highlights.” Thankfully, my hair is not completely gray, just a few patches conveniently located along my part. Maintaining haircolor has always been a challenge for me, especially since my chosen hue is generally in the family of reds—which, as any faux redhead knows, is a haircolor that fades oh-so-very fast (especially on those gray highlights). I’ve tried the usual approaches, ranging from high-end salon dye jobs to drugstore box color, to help maintain and refrain from the grip of grays. Each approach lasts only so long before the fading begins, leaving those silver strands to stand at attention.

After my latest dye job, I started using Earthly Elements Hair Care System Brazilian Citrus Color Preserving Shampoo and Conditioner. At first I was doubtful of their claim: Could products that are completely vegan and gluten-free really make my color last? Don’t get me wrong, I love natural products—particularly for my skin—but when it comes to my locks, I wasn’t so sure.

A week into using the shampoo and conditioner, my hair felt incredibly hydrated and the color looked as fresh as the day I got it done—no small feat, to be sure. Good start, especially considering I am an everyday hair-washer. But, no worry: Created with all-natural ingredients (and devoid of parabens and artificial fragrances), the shampoo and conditioner are gentle enough for everyday use. They both feature superstar ingredients like green tea extract, citrus oil and cranberry oil that work synergistically to restore balance and nutrients to my color-treated tresses, which I sorely need. Not only do I color my hair, but I also put it through it’s paces with heating tools, so it’s important everything I use have some nourishing value—including my shampoo.

While the color-retention factor definitely has me swooning, I must confess my favorite part of Earthly Elements Brazilian Citrus is dictated by my nose…the citrus scent is amazing. So often shampoos and conditioners for color-treated hair smell chock full of chemicals or are so floral it’s nauseating, but not so here. It’s fresh without being overpowering—just what you’d want after dousing your mane in smelly hair dye. And though I’m not completely swayed either way by the little added bonus on each bottle, an inspirational charm (one reads “dream,” the other “inspire”—probably should read “fade-resistant” and “color-booster” instead), they are kind of cute. Though I’m still figuring out what I will do with these tchotchkes, I’m certainly “inspired” to use this “dream” product again and again.
