Pro Logic: Liz Earle Talks Best Tips for Beauty Sleep Wednesday 26 September, 2012

Skin expert Liz Earle offers up four tips on how to get the beauty sleep you need to keep your skin healthy and gorgeous.

Some of our best beautifying happens while we catch some zzz’s. Why? Because when we sleep, our metabolic rate lowers, leading our body to put on the brakes of producing as many skin-damaging free radicals as it would while we’re awake. According to skin expert Liz Earle, our skin goes into “heal and repair” mode when we’re snoozing, so it’s ultra-important to treat skin with whatever hardworking skin care we deem it needs just prior to hitting the pillow.

But, if you’re like me, sleep doesn’t come easily—and if you’re not sleeping, your body and skin are still working overtime. Your complexion can suffer without the proper amount of sleep. Liz offers up these sandman-approved beauty tips for all of us insomniacs out there.

Zzzz’s No. 1: Magnesium can support restful sleep. Eat more foods that contain this sleep-inducing mineral, like leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

Zzzz’s No. 2: Take a warm bath before bed. Your body temperature will drop when you get out, which helps your body rest.

Zzzz’s No. 3: Vitamin C and other antioxidants help to strengthen blood vessels and reduce dark under-eye circles. Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables, like berries, oranges, broccoli and kale.

Zzzz’s No. 4: Try a simple candle meditation before bedtime. Light your favorite candles—try one with a lavender fragrance, which has been shown to aid in relaxation—then clear your mind, breathe deeply and prepare for a pretty perfect night’s sleep.

Even with all the eye creams in the world, they won’t do a darn thing without getting a good nights sleep. I love lighting up a candle before bed (citronella is the best!). It is just so relaxing. The only thing you have to worry about is to not fall asleep without blowing it out first-
